Everybody says this book bag feels like a hug! It really does!
Reconstructed Eco-friendly and sustainable book bag made from an navy plaid shirt, lined with jeans so the 'back pocket' becomes an interior pocket facing out of the collar opening.
A shoulder bag that sits on the right hip and over the left shoulder, the cuffs are attached across the front. The collar buttons up for security.
I love perusing the racks at the goodwill and buying individual shirts that have their own elan. A few months ago I grabbed one and made it into a satchel on a whim. I hadn't seen one before, simply conjured how a shirt could box up to make for a book bag. After a few compliments and prototypes, I worked out this charmer of a satchel.
The lining is made from a pair of toddler jeans, the cute-as-hell back pockets of the little feller make a perfect interior pocket for your keys and AirPods.
Every detail, from how the collar is modified to face forward, how the cuffs come together to sit across your chest, to the gusseted edging, I’m proud of my work.
You can be confident that this one-of-a-kind wearable artpiece has been made with care, by me and just me!
I can’t help it, I’m a maker and necessity was the mother of this invention. And let me say it again, it feels like a hug!
Size: interior space approximately 14” x 14” x 2”The sleeve/strap measures approximately 20” from shoulder to bottom of satchel.
The cuffs are connected end to end and are sewn so they sit across the chest in front. There isn’t a convenient way to make the sleeves adjustable like a regular purse strap. I prototyped different ways to adjust, and it never felt like it was in keeping with how the shirt simply wants to hug you around the shoulders!
The opening isn’t so large that a laptop can be inserted, but my iPad loves it in there! But this is really best living its life as a book bag and the interior pocket keeps the keys and such separate.
Here is the cool thing, though: button the shirt up and everything inside is safe as you go about your day!
Care: I wash my satchel just as if they were a pair of jeans, even going through the dryer, but if you want to hand wash and line dry, that might be better!
This book bag satchel is made with a whimsical, sustainable repurposeful Upcycle vibe I hope you’ll enjoy! It is handmade by me and gives new life to discarded clothes. You aren’t going to run into anyone with the same bag, that is for sure!
